Steerable Cantenna

29Aug06

Thanks to Wireless connections and wrongly configured routers, using your neighbour’s bandwidth has become something common nowadays. However, this kind of internet access relies on finding a strong wireless signal near your house, and the help of a cantenna can significantly increase your chances of finding come usable hotspot by widening the area you can reach.

The Steercan project, developed by Adrian Smith, is an enhanced version of the original cantenna idea, adding servos for dynamically controlling the position and direction of the device. This cantenna is able to automagically sniff out the spectrum of wireless signals it can receive, looking for the strongest one. When the best signal is found, it uses it.
